Map To Wikwemikong

Wawashkesh Wilderness ATV Tours invite you to our ancestral home, Wikwemikong,
Canada’s only officially recognized Unceded Indian Reserve. We are the people of the
Three Fires Confederacy, The Ojibwa, known as the faith keepers, the Odawa known
as the traders, and the Pottawatomi known as the fire keepers. An alliance of three
powerful nations since the early 1600s and through our ancestors we have been here
since time immemorial. We are proud of our heritage and we would like to share it with
you. Wikwemikong in the Odawa language means “Bay of The Beavers.”
The Wikwemikong Unceded Reserve is located on beautiful Manitoulin Island, the
largest freshwater island in the world. For most of the year access to the island is restricted to a swing bridge located 30 minutes from the reserve in Little Current, Ontario. If travelling from Sudbury, Ontario or southern Ontario follow highway 17 west bound to the junction of highway 6 near Espanola, Ontario. From Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario follow highway 17 east bound to Espanola, Ontario. Drive south through the scenic LaCloche Mountains to Little Current, Ontario. Continue south to Manitowaning, Ontario and then follow the signs.

The main Reserve covers 105,300 acres and extends north and south approximately
48 km and 20 km wide. Topography is featured by high plateau areas with steep cliffs to the north and east which gradually dip to the southwest. In the late spring, summer and early autumn, the Chi Cheemaun passenger ferry plies its way through the waters of Georgian Bay from Tobermory to South Bay Mouth on Manitoulin. The ferry runs several times each day and a one way journey takes 1 hr 45 min. Once on the Island head north to Manitowaning and again, follow the signs.
